Every visit starts with an error-code read on the indoor unit, then electrical checks at the isolator, breaker and control board, then refrigerant checks with gauges on the service valves. We work on the major brands, including Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Panasonic, on inverter and fixed-speed models alike. You get the fault explained in plain terms, with the failed part identified before any repair goes ahead. Send the quote form or call 07 3543 8972 with the model and what the unit is doing.
Split System Faults We Repair
Split systems fail in familiar ways in Rockhampton homes, rentals and small offices. These are the common faults behind split system aircon repairs, and what usually sits behind each one, from a flashing light to a unit that runs without cooling.
Error codes, flashing lights and units that won't start
Most modern splits flash a light pattern or show a code on the remote display when the control board or a sensor detects a fault. The code points to a circuit, not a part, so we confirm it with tests on the sensor, wiring and board before anything is replaced. Resetting the unit at the switchboard clears the display but not the fault. A unit that won't start at all usually comes down to a flat remote, a tripped breaker, a dead board or a damaged interconnect cable.
Noisy indoor and outdoor units
A noisy air conditioner usually tells you where to look. A rattle from the outdoor unit is often a loose panel, a loose wall bracket or a fan blade out of balance. A squeal that rises with fan speed usually means worn fan motor bearings, and a repeating click or buzz can come from a relay, a contactor or the compressor. Indoors, a dirty blower wheel or a failing motor makes noise too. If you hear grinding or banging, switch the unit off at the wall and leave it off until it's checked.
AC compressor repair and capacitor faults
A unit that hums but doesn't start, or an outdoor fan that spins while the room gets no cooling, is often blamed on the compressor. A failed capacitor causes the same symptoms and is a much smaller repair, so we test the capacitor and contactor first. When the compressor has failed, it is normally replaced rather than repaired, and whether that makes sense depends on the unit's age and condition. Sometimes replacing the whole system is the better move, and we say so.
Multi-head split system repairs
A multi-head split runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit, so a single fault can affect every room. The Australian Refrigeration Council's restricted split system licence (RSS03) doesn't cover installing multi-head systems, or any service or repair that involves handling refrigerant. Refrigerant repairs on these systems have to be done by a full RAC01 licence holder. We test the outdoor unit, the branch pipework and each head separately, so we know whether the fault sits in one room or across the whole system.
Brands we work on
We work on Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Toshiba and Haier split systems, along with other brands. That covers inverter models, which use a variable-speed compressor and a more involved control board, and older fixed-speed units. We source parts against the model number on your sticker, and for older units that can take longer. We're a repairer, not a brand representative. A Daikin air conditioner repair, a Fujitsu air conditioner repair and a Mitsubishi air conditioner repair all start the same way, with the model number and a proper fault-find.
How We Repair a Split System
Every split system repair follows the same four steps, in the same order, so the fault is found before any part is replaced or any refrigerant is touched.
- 1
Model, symptoms and error code
Before the visit we ask for the make, the model number from the sticker on the indoor or outdoor unit, what the unit is doing, and any error code or flashing light pattern. A photo of the sticker saves time and helps us bring the right parts. If the unit has been tripping out, tell us when it happens.
- 2
Power and control checks
We isolate the unit at the isolator switch and circuit breaker, then check supply voltage, wiring, the interconnect cable and the control board. Surge damage after a storm can show up here as a burnt board or a failed link between the indoor and outdoor units. These checks rule out the simple causes first.
- 3
Refrigerant circuit checks
With power restored, we fit gauges to the service valves and read pressures and temperatures against what the system should be doing. Refrigerant handling falls under ARCtick licensing, which requires a licence for work on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. A low reading means we look for the leak before we top anything up.
- 4
Repair, run and hand back
We fit the part, run the unit in cooling and measure the supply-air temperature at the indoor unit. We clear the codes, then show you what failed and explain what we found and what we did, so you know what to watch for. If anything else on the unit is wearing, we say so.

Split System Air Conditioner Repairs for Rockhampton's Long Summers
Bureau of Meteorology records for Rockhampton Aero show 140.1 days a year reaching 30°C and 20 days reaching 35°C. Its highest recorded temperature is 45.3°C, set in November. Even in July the mean maximum is 23.3°C, and the station averages only about 1 day a year at or below 2°C, so cooling dominates over heating. A reverse-cycle split here works hard for most of the year, not just in summer.
Outdoor units on western walls take full afternoon sun, which pushes condenser temperatures up and loads the compressor, fan motor and capacitor. Add storms that bring power surges, and humid air that keeps a unit running longer to hold a room at temperature, and the wear shows up in the same places. Capacitors, fan motors, control boards and compressors are the parts that take the most wear on a split system.
Refrigerant and Electrical Work Done to the Rules
Two sets of rules apply to split system repairs, one for refrigerant and one for electrical work, and both exist for good reason.
ARC rules for refrigerant work
The Australian Refrigeration Council's RAC01 full licence covers work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, and handling refrigerant, for any work other than automotive. Car aircon needs a separate licence, and this site covers home and business systems only. Any repair that opens the refrigerant circuit is followed by a pressure and leak check before we hand the unit back.
Electrical faults and Queensland licensing
Queensland treats refrigerant and electrical authority as two different things. A refrigeration mechanic working on a split needs an electrical worker licence or a restricted electrical work licence as well as the gas licence. The Electrical Safety Office issues the restricted licence for electrical work incidental to the trade. Anything beyond that, such as new circuits or switchboard work, is a job for a licensed electrician.
What you get at hand-back
When the job is done, we tell you which fault we found and show you the part we replaced. We explain the test readings, including the pressures and the supply-air temperature, so you can see the unit is working as it should. If a repair doesn't make sense on an older unit, we say so before you spend more.
What Affects the Cost of a Split System Repair?
Two split systems with the same symptom can cost very different amounts to put right. We don't list figures on this page because the price depends on what we find. These are the factors that decide it, and the quote form is the quickest way to get a quote for your unit.
The part that failed
A failed sensor or capacitor is a small repair. A fan motor, control board or compressor is a bigger one, and the cost follows the part and the labour to fit it.
Age and parts availability
Older and less common models can mean parts that take longer to source. Units that run on R22 are a particular case, because that refrigerant has been phased out.
Where the outdoor unit sits
A ground-level unit is quick to reach. One on a wall bracket or a roof needs more time and equipment, and some need safe access set up first.
Whether refrigerant work is needed
A leak adds finding it, repairing it and re-gassing the system. A repair with no refrigerant work is a simpler job.
Split System Repair Questions
What is the 3-minute rule for air conditioners?
The 3-minute rule is a restart delay that stops the compressor starting again straight after it switches off. Wait about 3 minutes after turning the unit off before restarting it, because starting against built-up refrigerant pressure strains the compressor. The exact delay varies by model, so check your manual. If the unit won't restart after a long wait, it needs a check.
Why is my air conditioner making a loud noise?
An air conditioner makes a loud noise when something is loose, worn or failing. Rattling is usually a loose panel or fan blade, squealing is often fan motor bearings, and buzzing or clicking can point to a capacitor, relay or compressor. If you hear grinding or banging, switch the unit off at the wall and have it checked before running it again.
Why does my aircon make noise when it's turned off?
An aircon makes noise when it's turned off mostly because of normal changes in the system. Plastic panels click as they cool, and valves and refrigerant pressures settle after a run. A persistent hum, or a unit that keeps trying to start while off, needs a check, as it can point to a faulty relay, board or contactor.
Can an air conditioner compressor be repaired?
An air conditioner compressor can rarely be repaired and is usually replaced as a whole. Capacitors and contactors often mimic compressor failure, so we test those first. If the compressor has failed, we weigh the replacement against the unit's age and condition, because on an older system a new unit can make more sense.
What affects the cost of an aircon compressor replacement?
The cost of an aircon compressor replacement depends on unit size, refrigerant type, access and age. A larger kW capacity needs a larger compressor, and the system has to be evacuated and re-charged after the swap. On an older unit, replacing the whole system can be the better outlay, and we explain the options in the quote.
Is my split system worth repairing if it is over 10 years old?
A split system over 10 years old is worth repairing if the fault is minor, parts are available and the rest of the unit is sound. If the compressor or board has failed, compare the repair against a new unit. For Rockhampton buyers, the hot-zone stars on the Zoned Energy Rating Label are the ones that matter. Our page on split system replacement covers that side.
