A proper service starts with checking how the unit runs, then cleaning the filters, evaporator coil, fan and drain, and testing it all again before we leave. Doing it before summer means the system goes into the hot months clean, draining properly and cooling the way it should. We also tell you if we spot a worn part or a fault that needs a repair, so you are not caught out in the first heatwave.

What an Air Conditioner Service Covers
Most of a service happens where you can't see it: the filters, the evaporator coil, the fan and the drain. Here is what we clean and check on each type of system.
Split System Service and Deep Clean
We take the front panel off, wash the filters, and clean the louvres and the evaporator coil. The fan barrel (the long roller that pushes air into the room) gets cleaned too, because dust and mould build up there and throw the smell back at you. A wash bag catches the dirty water so your walls and floor stay dry. We also clean the drain tray and check the outdoor unit for blocked fins.
AC Filter Cleaning
Dirty filters choke airflow and make the compressor work harder. RACQ advises cleaning air conditioner filters once a year so the unit runs efficiently. Systems that run most of the day through a Rockhampton summer need it more often. Most filters are washable, so we rinse them, let them dry and refit them. Any that are torn, warped or bent out of shape we flag for replacement, because a damaged filter lets dust straight through to the coil.
Mould and Musty Smells
Mould grows on the evaporator coil, the fan and the drain tray, where the surfaces are cold, wet and dark. Warm, humid air feeds it every time the unit runs. A spray-and-wipe at the louvres only treats what you can see. We clean the coil and fan properly so the smell is removed at its source, then dry and reassemble the unit. If the mould is heavy, we tell you what we found before we start.
Drain Line and Drain Tray Cleaning
Every cooling air conditioner produces water, and it has to go somewhere. Slime and debris block the drain line, and the water backs up and drips inside. We clean the tray, flush the line and test the flow. Where a unit uses a condensate pump, we check that it lifts the water away as it should. A blocked drain is one of the most common causes of water on the floor under an indoor unit, and it is usually quick to clear once found.
Ducted System Servicing
On a ducted system we clean the return air filter and grille, then the indoor unit's coil and drain. We check the outlets for dust build-up and airflow, and look over the visible ductwork for loose joints or damage. Faults in zones, dampers or ducts are a repair job rather than a clean, and we will tell you if we find one. Most ducted systems have a return air grille in a hallway or ceiling, and a clogged one is a common reason for poor airflow throughout the whole house.
What Happens at an Air Conditioner Service
Every service follows the same order, so nothing is skipped and you know what has been done. Here is how a visit runs for a typical split system.
- 1
Check It Running First
Before we clean anything, we run the unit and note the airflow, the air temperature, any odd noises and any error code on the display. That gives us a baseline. It also shows whether the smell or weak cooling is a cleaning problem or something that needs a repair.
- 2
Isolate and Protect
We switch the unit off at the isolator switch, then cover the wall and floor beneath the indoor unit. The wash bag is fitted so water and dirt go into it, not into your room. We also keep the electrical parts of the indoor unit dry while we work.
- 3
Clean Filters, Coil, Fan and Drain
We wash the filters, then clean the coil and fan with products and water pressure suited to the fins and the unit. The drain tray and drain line are cleaned and flushed so water runs freely out of the unit.
- 4
Reassemble and Test
Everything goes back together and we run the unit again. We check that the drain flows, the airflow has improved and the cooling is steady. Anything else we find, such as a worn part, a damaged fin or a drain that needs further work, we report to you plainly so you can decide what to do next.

Air Conditioning Service in Rockhampton: Why Humidity Matters
Rockhampton summers are damp as well as hot. At Rockhampton Aero, the Bureau of Meteorology records a mean 9am relative humidity of 70% in January and 73% in February. Mean 9am dew point sits at 20.6°C in January and 20.9°C in February, compared with 9.9°C in July.
All that moisture means a lot of condensate. Coils, trays and drain lines stay wet for months, and that is exactly what mould needs. A unit that runs hard from November through to March has a lot of time to collect it.
Units near the coast have a second problem. Daikin Australia notes that outdoor coils near the coast are exposed to salt damage and atmospheric corrosion, and says maintenance is essential to combat it. If your system is in Yeppoon or Emu Park, regular coil care matters even more. We come to your home or business and do the clean on site.
What a Proper Service Includes
Cleaning is only part of the job. These are the standards we work to.
Coils Cleaned Without Damaging Fins
Evaporator and condenser fins are thin aluminium and bend easily. We use cleaning products and water pressure suited to the coil, and comb back any fins that have been flattened. Doing it carefully protects the unit and gets the airflow back. A coil that is cleaned hard enough to damage it will restrict airflow and make the problem worse.
Drains Tested, Not Just Flushed
Flushing a drain line proves very little, because a partly blocked line can still pass a small amount of water. We run water through the tray and watch it leave the unit, so we know it drains. If it doesn't, we keep working until it does or tell you what is needed to fix it.
A Short Service Report
After the visit, you get a plain summary of what was cleaned, the condition we found the unit in, and anything that needs repair. If we have found a possible refrigerant leak or a worn part, you will hear about it, so you can decide what to do next. Keep the summary with the unit's paperwork and it gives the next technician a clear starting point.
What Affects the Cost of an Air Conditioner Service?
The price of a service depends on the system and its condition, so we work it out once we know what you have. Tell us about your units when you call or fill in the quote form and we will give you a free quote.
Number of Units
One split system in a bedroom is a shorter job than a whole house with several. Each unit is cleaned individually.
System Type
A wall split, a cassette unit and a ducted system each take different amounts of work, and need different tools and access.
Condition
Heavy mould or a unit that hasn't been cleaned in years takes longer to bring back to a clean state.
Access
High walls, tight spaces and indoor units in roof spaces take more time to reach and to work on safely.
Air Conditioner Servicing Questions
Why does my air conditioner smell musty when I turn it on?
A musty smell when you turn on your air conditioner usually means mould or bacteria on the evaporator coil and fan. These surfaces stay damp every time the unit cools, and Rockhampton's humid summers make it worse. Washing the filter rarely fixes it, because the source is deeper inside the unit.
How do I get rid of mould in my aircon?
To get rid of mould in your aircon, the coil, fan and drain tray need a professional clean. Washing the filters helps but only deals with part of it. We clean the coil and fan properly, then dry and test the unit so the smell does not come straight back.
How often should my air conditioner be serviced?
Most air conditioners should be serviced at least once a year, ideally before summer. Units that run most of the day, or that sit near the coast, are better off with a service more often. A clean system cools better and gives you fewer surprises when the hot weather arrives.
How often should I clean my aircon filters?
You should clean your aircon filters at least once a year. RACQ advises a yearly filter clean so the unit runs efficiently. If the unit runs daily, there is a lot of dust in the house or you have pets, check them more often. A blocked filter reduces airflow and makes the unit work harder.
What affects the cost of getting an air conditioner cleaned?
The cost of cleaning an air conditioner depends on the number of units, the system type, its condition and how easy it is to reach. A single split is quicker than a ducted system with a roof-space unit. Send us the details and we will give you a free quote.
Do you clean air conditioners at homes in Rockhampton?
Yes, we do air conditioner cleaning in Rockhampton at homes and businesses across the city and the surrounding area. We come to you and do the work on site. Tell us your suburb and the type of system when you get in touch.
